Our Mission
To prevent underage drinking in Lee’s Summit by creating
awareness, educating parents and youth, encouraging
enforcement of current laws and creation of new policies
where needed. |
In
2004 Lee's Summit CARES formed the Partnership to
Prevent Underage Drinking coalition as a result of the
opportunity to participate in the Community Trials
Initiative (CTI) grant. Representation on the coalition
is from many sectors of the community; law enforcement,
education, faith, parents, youth, business, PTA, local
government and health care.
The
CTI Grant funded enforcement initiatives such as
Compliance Checks and Party Patrols. It also
funded Alcohol Retailer Training and a community
awareness campaign Those Who Host Lose the Most.
Lee's
Summit CARES was fortunate to be awarded the Strategic
Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG)
immediately after the CTI grant ended in September 2006.
The intent of SPF SIG is to reduce risky drinking (binge
and underage) in the age group twelve to twenty-five.
As a result of an extensive needs assessment performed
at the beginning of this grant the coalition chose the
following intervening variables as priorities:
-
Parties in the Lee’s Summit area are leading to
risky drinking among some 12-18 year olds in the
Lee’s Summit CARES service area.
-
Noncompliance with alcohol laws by Lee’s Summit
alcohol retailers is leading to risky drinking among
some 12-18 year olds in the Lee’s Summit CARES
service area.
-
Some Lee’s Summit students are not bonding to
school, which indicates that they are at risk for
underage drinking and other risky behaviors, such as
binge drinking.
The
coalition was required to selected two model programs to
address the above intervening variables; Student
Assistance Program and Community Trials
Intervention.
A Student Assistance Program Coordinator has been hired
to coordinate the efforts of the program among all
schools in the school district. Under the
Community Trials Intervention model program Compliance
Checks and Party Patrols will be continued. A new
Alcohol Retailer Training program (TIPS) was purchased,
a community awareness campaign is continuing, the Teen
Council Safe Prom & Graduation campaign will be funded,
high school ATOD clubs are being funded and middle
school ATOD clubs were created.
