Fred PickardFred grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. He graduated from Marysville High School and enlisted in the Air Force. During his tour of duty, he was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas. After being honorably discharged, Fred settled in Kansas City with his wife and young family. Service to his country, first started with the Air Force, continued with his work for the federal government's General Services Administration. Fred served the GSA for twelve years, then moved to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to work for the National Weather Service. At the Weather Service, Fred was responsible for quality control of electronic equipment and ensured that tax payer dollars were spent effectively and efficiently. He worked for the Weather Service for fourteen years. After twenty-eight years of faithful service to the government and his country, he retired to Lee's Summit. Retirement was a chance for Fred to become more active in his community. His involvement began with his selection to take part in the Lee's Summit Police Department Citizen's Academy. This experience led Fred to increased awareness of the issues that affect the police officers and the young people in the Lee's Summit community. He worked on the Shop With A Cop program in its early years helping to raise funds and awareness for the children in need. Fred was appointed to the Lee's Summit Public Safety Advisory board by Mayor Karen Messerli in 2001. He participates in the ride-along program to get first hand information from the officers to enhance his role as advocate. After joining the Elks Lodge #2804 in Lee's Summit, Fred became more involved in issues regarding children. He was Drug Awareness chairman and worked with DARE and local school resource officers. This dedication to young people of our community led him to volunteer for Lee's Summit CARES. As a volunteer, he has worked on Parent University, After Prom parties for Lee's Summit North High School and other extensive projects as needed. Fred also served the community in 1999 on the City Hall Planning Board until its completion in 2004. Fred and his wife have two children and one granddaughter. He has lived in Lee's Summit since 1993. When he is not volunteering, Fred loves to follow the Detroit Red Wings hockey team and anything that involves car racing. |
